History
The coalmining company founded in 1871 probably took its name from that of the German emperor-to-be Friedrich III who was popularly known as "Our Fritz" ("Unser Fritz"). In the same year work began on sinking the first shaft for the eponymous colliery in what is now the suburb of Wanne in Herne. In 1873 the Malakow tower above shaft number 1 was erected and in 1874 mining began. A neighbouring shaft (number 4) was opened in 1910 and from then on shaft number 1 was only used as a ventilation shaft. After "Unser Fritz" was merged with the Consolidation colliery the 1/4 site was shut down in 1928, but was still maintained. Starting in 1936 it was used for man-riding and material haulage for the Consolidation colliery.
Shaft number1 was backfilled in 1987 and man-riding ceased at shaft number 4 in 1993.
Malakow towers like the one above shaft number 1 came into fashion in the Ruhr area after 18510 and were an improvement on the previous shaft houses. Greater shaft depths and heavier haulage weights revealed problems in construction and static and these were solved by means of high, thick-walled towers strengthened by buttresses. Their fortress-like appearance led them to be called "Malakow towers", after the fort in the Russian fortress of Sebastopol which had been put up under the siege during the Crimean War. Improvements in steel quality and steel constructions led to steel head frames superseding the brick towers. In 1890 shaft number 1at the Unser Fritz colliery was equipped with a steel strut frame which appeared to grow out of the Malakow tower. this construction dominated the town horizon for many years in the early 1950s. At the same time the tower was raised by a metre and the roof was closed over.
